GET THE FACTS
Arizona police officer ran into Mario Valencia of 36 years on February 19th. A video of the situation was released and many claim police brutatilty while the Arizona Police Department claim the officer saved lives. Valencia was found walking down the street firing a stolen Walmart rifle into the air. Police claim they asked him to drop the gun many times. Valencia is also being charged for robbing a 7-eleven, setting a church on fire, breaking and entering a home and stealing a car, and robbing a nearby Walmart.
OK, Mario is kind of crazy. The guy lit up a Church right after robbing a gas station in his underwear. I think the officer did the logical thing. Often when people accuse the police of using too much force to stop a situation they forget a number of things. First, read the entire story, including what happened before and after the incident and both sides. My man Mario was committing crimes all day long AND THEN was firing a gun while walking down the street. It wasn't one felony but an accumulation. Second, consider the environment. It was the middle of the day. Innocent people are awake and many are driving or perhaps taking a walk. If a person is strolling down the street with a rifle, something is going to have to be fun so citizens don’t panic. Third, look at the situation from both sides. As Mario, you might have just wanted to take a nice stroll down the street with your stolen rifle and that’s ok. But you also have to look at the officer’s point of view. There is a man with a gun. Yes, he could be perfectly stable mentally and calm and perhaps he’s just walking home. However, there is also the possibility that the fella is mentally unhealthy or just very angry and could take citizen hostage or straight up kill a citizen at any point. Ultimately, the poice are present to protect the people, so some action did need to take place.
In this situation, I think the officer did what he had to do. If a man has a deadly weapon that he will not put down, he is a danger to not only the officer but also those around him. While it is not the perfect outcome, it is the necessary one.
ReplyDeleteI do think action needed to take place since Mario was unwilling to put down the gun. I just hope that people will use the minimum force needed in order to prevent bad situations from happening
